The Vitra Akari 55A Suspension Light was conceptualised in 1951 by Isamu Noguchi and was the first design of it's series. The 55A displays a beautiful light through the washi paper and would look stunning as a one of a kind focal point for any space, from bedrooms to living rooms.
The Akari Light Sculptures (1951) by Isamu Noguchi are a series of luminaires, handcrafted from traditional shoji paper by Japanese artisans. ‘The harshness of electricity is thus transformed through the magic of paper back to the light of our origin – the sun.’ (Noguchi)
The Akari series is inspired by the Japanese word for 'Light' and is characterised by the use of washi paper wrapped around lightweight bamboo. The collection now comprises over one hundred designs, featuring suspension lights, table lights and floor lights
